Sundaland's ecosystems are threatened by human-caused activities and climate changes, such as logging, farming practices, rampant wildlife overexploitation, and the rising and falling of climate that have led to frequent wildfires and a decline in original plant and animal species.

Sundaland lies within the tropics, with the equatorial line passing through central Borneo and Sumatra. This region encounters continual moisture, receiving over 2,000mm of rainfall annually. Rainfall is heavy all year round, lacking any detectable dry season as seen in other parts of Southeast Asia.
